World Englishes app for iPhone and iPad

Waseda University proudly presents "World Englishes," an application designed for smart phones.

The English language is widely accepted as a tool for international communication. Todays world has come to a point where about half its population is estimated to be speaking English by the year 2050, and thus, studying English as a global language is essential to all of us. Nevertheless, "English" cannot simply be summed up in a word or two. It varies from country to country, not to mention the much-discussed differences between American English and British English. In fact, communication in English is known to fall apart in some countries due to accent and pronunciation variations.

Drawing from a wide-ranging materials used in Wasedas ongoing course entitled "World Englishes and Miscommunications," this application is designed to help you learn certain characteristics unique to English spoken in Asian nations and other parts of the world as well as the cultural background surrounding them. Some of the accents of English provided in this application originate in different parts of a region selected, but they represent the regions standard and stereotypical English. Now, immerse yourself in the world of English that is spoken all around the globe and get a taste of the diversity it has to offer.

This application features academic lectures delivered by faculty members from around Asia. For each lecture, the audio recording and the text are presented in sync so that you can take advantage of such functions as the "highlight" display mode or the "fade out" display mode that allow you to perform shadowing or practice listening.



◆ Select from the following four options for the text display that best caters to your study style.
・"Highlight" display mode: changes text colors following the audio recording (as with a Karaoke screen).
・"Fade Out" display mode: erases the text that has been played.
・"Fade In" display mode: displays only the text that has been played.
・Non-text display mode
◆ Audio playback speed is selectable from "slow" (0.5 times as fast), "normal", or "fast" (1.5 times as fast).
◆ Cueing: This function allows you to tap an English word from which you wish to play the audio recording.
◆ Reference display: Swipe the screen to the right to display references related to the lecture.
◆ After selecting a country of your choice, tap "Profile" to display the profile of the speaker.


『World Englishes』は早稲田大学が提供するスマートフォン向けアプリケーションです。

現在、英語は世界共通のコミュニケーションツールとして使用されています。2050年には世界の人口の約半分は英語を話すと言われる中、国際語や世界共通語としての英語を学んでいくことは必要不可欠です。しかしながら、ひとことで「英語」と言っても、国によってその特徴は異なります。アメリカ英語、イギリス英語以外にも、国によってはアクセントや発音が異なるためにコミュニケーションがうまくとれないという事が少なくはありません。
本アプリケーションでは、実際に早稲田大学で行われている授業「World Englishes and Miscommunications」の教材をもとに、アジアを中心とする各国の英語の特徴や文化的背景を学ぶことができます。本アプリに収録されている英語は地域ごとに異なるアクセントがありますが、その地域では標準的な英語です。ぜひ、あなた自身の耳で世界各国で話されている英語を聞き、その多様性を感じてみてください！

本アプリには、アジア各国の大学教員による講義が収録されています。講義は、音声とテキストがシンクロ表示されますので、受講者は、カラオケのようなハイライト表示や順次消去していくフェードアウト表示などを利用してシャドーイングやリスニングの語学学習を行うことができます。

【主な機能】
◆自身の学習スタイルに合わせてテキストの表示スタイルを以下の3種類から選択可能。
・音声に合わせてテキストの色が変わっていくカラオケモード。
・再生済みのテキストが消えていくFade Outモード。
・テキスト非表示モード。
◆音声の再生速度も、遅い(0.5倍速)・通常・速い(1.5倍速)の3段階に変更可能。
◆頭出し機能：英文中の単語をタップするとその単語から再生することが可能。
◆関連資料表示：英文中の画面を右にスワイプすると、その講義の関連資料を表示。
◆視聴したい国を選んだあとにProfileをタップするとスピーカーのプロフィールを表示。
